On May 25th, 2020, George Floyd, an African-American man, was murdered in Minneapolis by a white police officer. The incident, captured on video by a bystander, incited protests against police brutality and systemic racism, sparking widespread discussion and a plea for greater awareness and education. People gathered en masse to protest all over the United States, and the rest of the world followed suit.
During Covid-19, I was on lockdown in Lisbon, Portugal. When a protest date was announced for Lisbon, I put on my mask and marched the streets amongst 5000 people in support of the Black Lives Matter movement. It was devastatingly beautiful.
As an emerging photojournalist, I felt compelled to document this moment. I captured photographs and short clips, from which I created a short video encapsulating the emotion of the protest.
